The development of this typeface was inspired by the ancient art of stone engraving. Bylis, one of the most advanced cities in the southern region of Illyria, was renowned for its rich artistic and cultural heritage. This legacy is evident even today through the preserved artifacts that have endured over time. This historical richness sparked the idea of creating a font that embodies the essence of Bylis, using similar historical materials as references.
Central to this exploration was the intricate mosaic of Bylis, characterized by its detailed figures and forms, many of which are connected to the pagan cults of the era. The craftsmanship of stone and its preservation through centuries has resulted in lines that do not adhere to rigid geometric shapes but instead flow in a more organic shapes.
Through this created typography, we aim to preserve and convey the identity, origin, authenticity, and emotional depth of Bylis. Additionally, we strive to infuse a dynamic element into the typeface, revitalizing it and making the heritage of Bylis more accessible and tangible to contemporary audiences.
The symbol
The approach focuses on creating a symbol based solely on text/typography, emphasizing the phrases "Bylis - Klos" and "Archaeological Park." The typography is custom-made by reconstructing letters from elements found carved into artifacts discovered in the ancient city of Bylis. The symbol uses no extra decorations, relying solely on the names "Bylis" and "Klos". For this reason, the "Archaeological Park" is always part of the symbol/logo.
Since the popularity of this archaeological site is not widespread, we chose to use a direct form of communication.
